The Ultegra FD features a redesigned internal structure that incorporates Shimano's InfinityXross technology. Its goal is to improve gear life for the long haul, where the cold-forged Hagane gear of the previous generation is updated with an improved tooth design that creates greater surface area so the drive and pinion gear mesh together more smoothly. The load placed on the gear teeth from reeling in a fish or lure is more efficiently distributed, mitigating stress points which could lead to pre-mature failure and excessive wear. Complementing its InfinityXross technology, InfinityDrive technology further refines smooth, effortless winding even under heavy loads. Unlike the design of the past where the main shaft was supported by the pinion gear, it is now supported by a new and unique bushing that mitigates friction. The main shaft also undergoes a proprietary surface treatment and processing, reducing rotational torque dramatically. Protecting the vital internal components of the reel from water and other harsh containments, X-Protect focuses on a non-contact structure. The reels' conventional water-repellant treatment along with a labyrinthine design structure work together, shedding water away quickly and preventing it from penetrating and contacting internal parts of the reel.
