It"s Going to be a Good Winter for Fishing

Posted on Saturday, 10/29/11 3:32 pm by capternest in Lower Laguna with Capt Ernest Cisneros
Fishing has been absolutely awesome with limits of trout and reds easily attainable. During the New and Full moon periods water levels have come up considerably and when it has the back lake shorelines have really turned on. Wind ward shorelines have also produced well, redfish are prowling these shorelines early in the morning feeding on little shrimp and medium size pinfish. Throwing small topwaters like a super spook jr has worked like a charm in catching redfish in the 24 to 28 inch slot. When the water has not been so high, the sand and grass transition has been the place to be and if the surrounding area contains potholes that has been a big plus in finding quality trout. Bait availability is in great shape and mullet or other pinfish will be the main course meal as winter is approaching. Our water temperature is currently in the mid seventies so fish can still be found up shallow all day long and because of the current and favorable water temperatures these fish have been extremely active in their fight. Because of what I'm seeing and in-spite of the red tide that is present out in the Gulf along the beach front shorelines, the winter fishing outlook looks to be an outstanding one.

Early July in Lower Laguna Madre

Posted on Thursday, 07/07/11 10:45 am by capternest in Lower Laguna with Capt Ernest Cisneros
Slick calm mornings are currently the norm down south, which means lots of redfish wakes up in the shallows. Redfish have been fairly easy to pattern but sometimes you just have to wait for them to feed. When the fish have not been actively feeding they seem to follow our topwaters with no commitment to eat it. Along with the redfish trout can also be found in the early morning, a few big ones have been caught but for the most part the trout we have been catching have been in 16 to 22 inch range. The best bite has been occurring right as the incoming tide begins to move in the particular we are fishing. We are keying on areas around the sand-grass transition and potholes as always are holding lots of good fish. Topwaters have been our go to bait but as the water warms up we then switch to dark plastics such as the plum/blue metal flake Kelley Wiggler ball tail shad. Fishing is great right now down south but make sure you protect yourself from the elements because it has been a scorcher. Good fishing to you!

Redfish in Sandy Areas in Lower Laguna

Posted on Monday, 06/13/11 6:20 pm by capternest in Lower Laguna with Capt Ernest Cisneros
Our winds have finally laid down making the fishing or the catching I should say, phenomenal. Our redfish catches have greatly improved when compared to last month's blusterous conditions. A sure way of catching redfish has been to target areas with slightly deeper potholes. Redfish are using these sandy areas to station themselves during the heat of the day and they are very willing to take a Kelley Wiggler in Plum/Blue Metal flake on a 1/8 oz jig head. Along with good redfish numbers our trout have been fairly easy to pattern. Deeper guts and grass beds have been the top producers for limits of speckled trout. Both topwaters and tails have been working really well on trout. In addition I am happy to report that the flounder population down south is still going on very strong, we have not seen a good flounder year like this one in quite some time. Our bay waters are starting to warm up rather quickly as air temperatures are beginning to soar, think shallow early and deep later in the day. Good luck in your catching!

Top Water bite is on in Lower Laguna Madre

Posted on Friday, 05/20/11 1:34 pm by capternest in Lower Laguna with Capt Ernest Cisneros
Fishing on the LLM has been terrific, limits of redfish and trout have been fairly common. The key depth for us has been right around thigh to waist deep water. Topwaters have been working really well for us, like the mid size skitter walks in white and pink, super spook jr's in red head - white body and also the bone color has been drawing alot of attention. Fish have been abundant in many places but the key to getting on a good bite has been timing. A moving tide on the flats has been the ticket to getting these fish to feed. Many of the redfish we catching have been in the upper slot and trout have not disappointed us with several in the upper twenties. The tide continues to be high so look for shorelines and the back bays to be good producers. As a bonus, flounder have been readily available to those willing to fish guts or drop-offs. In closing, I would like to put in a good word for the new FTU aluminum pliers, if you are not familiar with them I suggest go by and take a look at a pair. Good fishing.

Lower Laguna 4/12/11

Posted on Wednesday, 04/13/11 11:58 am by capternest in Lower Laguna with Capt Ernest Cisneros
This past week end the winds were blowing pretty hard which made fishing conditions very tough. The beginning of this week the winds finally layed down and the fishing really turned on. Redfish have been up really shallow and topwaters have gotten their attention. The quality and quantity of our trout have been on the upper end, we are catching good numbers and trout in the five to six lbs have come on every trip. When fish are not wanting surfaces baits a Kelly Wiggler rigged on a 1/8 oz jig head has done the trick. Surprisingly surface grass has not been a problem, but in areas near the Arroyo and up north to Port Mansfield a fine green algae has been a nuisance when jigging the bottom.

Have a Great Day,
Ernest

Port Isabel 4/1/11

Posted on Saturday, 04/02/11 1:24 pm by capternest in Lower Laguna with Capt Ernest Cisneros
Here's a report from down south: Fishing as of lately has been really good on quality trout and redfish. Our water has warmed up enough that the topwater bite is on. We have been catching lots of keeper size trout and a few up to six pounds on a variety of topwaters from medium size skitter walks to small size super spook jrs. Redfish have also been very active on top. We are now wet wading and concentrating our efforts in waist to knee deep water, although the bigger fish do seem to be up shallower. Darker worms rigged on 1/8 oz jigged heads have also brought us much success when the surface bait activity has been little or non-existent. As a plus flounder have showed up in really good numbers as many have come into our nets. One thing you do have to prepare for is the strong southerly winds that are prevalent this time of the year, but overall I would not hesitate to say that our fishing is as good as it gets in the spring.
