And Fall Fishing Begins

Posted on Friday, 10/28/11 3:57 pm by captronnie
Joe Borden and David Badger fished with me on 9-29 and 9-30.The first day we fished the spoil banks out of Port O and caught some nice trout 17 to 20 inches using chicken on a chain Bass Assasins. We had only about a 1 hour feeding period that morning before they shut off. The second day we caught lots of redfish on spoons and live shrimp. We fished mainly in the back bays close to Port O along grassy shorelines. The reds are really schooled up now and you can spot large schools of them roaming the shorelines. The water temp has dropped to around 76 degrees and the fish have started to be a ...

A little note from the recipient of a Free Fishing Trip donated by Capt Ron Elkins and Fishing Tackle Unlimited: Ron, thank you for the great time on the water. Sorry it took eight months to get there but it was worth the wait. I have been telling co-workers about your ultimate “fisher-man cave”. Also thanks to the folks at FTU in Houston. Thanks again Steve Geary

Fishin' is Hot in Port O'Conner

Posted on Tuesday, 08/16/11 4:47 pm by captronnie
The fishing along with the weather right now is pretty hot. The surf is still producing some good trout and oversized redfish. Also we are doing well at times in Matagorda Bay at the gas wells. The Wind!! from Port O'Conner

Posted on Friday, 08/12/11 3:06 pm by captronnie
The wind! Seems like it will never stop. I can't remember a August like this in 21 years. The past week we have been hitting the wells early. By 9:00 am we are headed for cover. There are a lot of bull reds in the bay now, but some days we don't find them before the wind makes it kinda uncomforfable. Trout fishing on the shorelines has been very good lately early in the morning. With the tides and big moon the last week we are catching most of our fish early. If you get into the big reds, enjoy and release. They are our future generations resource. Capt Ron Captain Ron Elkins Professional ...

Now is the time to fish Port O'Conner

Posted on Monday, 08/01/11 8:01 pm by captronnie
This week is starting out great and should even get better. My party this morning was James Hanson and his friend Jessica from Victoria. We went to the surf with soft plastic baits hoping that the trout gods would be kind to us. First cast on a red and white swimming shad brought a 45 inch red fish to hand. From there it was nothing but trout in the second bar. We fished till 10:00 catching trout from 16 to 24 inches. A great day and beautiful weather rounded out the morning. Looks like we are going to get at least 2 more days of calm weather, and I have Wednesday open. Catch enough to eat ...

06/12/11 Report from Port O'Conner

Posted on Monday, 06/13/11 3:28 pm by captronnie
The wind gave us a little break this last week and we were able to key in on some areas that have been off limits the past month. Caught good numbers of trout over shallow and deep shell in the 17 to 23 inch range. Fairly calm a couple of the days and tried to fish the surf north of big jetties, but water very dirty. Found green water south in surf and good trout till half the crew got seasick and finished the day at the wells in Matagorda Bay catching trout up to 19 inches. Most fish caught on the new Attaxx jerk baits and swimming Shad. Good luck and good fishing. Captain Ron Elkins ...

5/26/11 Report from Port O'Conner

Posted on Friday, 05/27/11 5:02 pm by captronnie
Just got back from a week in St. John (not fishing) and really enjoyed touring the different American and British islands.  Fishing this week has been kinda hit and miss with the wind still howling here.  Caught most of our fish on shell in the South Pass area and on what little protected shell we could find in San Antonio Bay.  Yesterday fished till almost 7 P.M. to locate a small amount of fish for my clients, wind blew around 20 to 25 all day.  Today a different story, small front came through overnight and we had light northeast winds this morning.  Went to surf ...

The past weeks fishing has seemed to pickup coming up to the last full moon. Good number of trout are starting to show up in Matagorda Bay around the shipping lane spoils and along the shoreline of Matagorda Panizula. Sunday and Monday we did well on reda and trout using the new Attraxx soft plastics in chartruse colors on trout and the black/chartruse and rootbeer/chartruse on reds up to 26 inches. Wind has been pretty high lately and has kept us mainly stuck to the protected shorelines. Top water bite has been on and off, but worth the effort. Water temp. sunday was 71 degrees. Our ...

Some of our better fishing has been in the late afternoons. Glass minnows are beginning to show up on points of shorelines lately. Catching trout and reds feeding on them with soft plastics and topwaters. Jetty guides are doing well at the rocks on redfish and sheephead with live bait and sardines. Bait camps have good supplies of shrimp.
